Abnormal Liver Tests

Blood tests are commonly taken to assess liver function or liver injury.  This measures the levels of certain enzymes (proteins) in the blood.  Normally these enzymes stay within the cells of the liver, but when the liver is damaged for any reason, these enzymes move into the blood stream.

What causes Abnormal Liver Tests?

If your liver tests are abnormal this could be caused by;

  • Viral hepatitis
  • Infectious mononucleosis
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Certain medication/alcohol
  • Autoimmune diseases

These diseases are generally treatable – the MacMurray Liver Specialist would recommend the best cause of treatment.
