Scott Crawford

I grew up in Auckland before moving to Singapore for 10 years during my later childhood. I graduated from the University of Otago in 2009 and completed my specialist training in General Medicine and Nephrology across regional and metropolitan hospitals, including Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay, and Wellington. I also hold a Clinical Diploma in Palliative Medicine.

As a strategic clinical leader, I have a strong track record of leading quality initiatives to improve the outcomes for my patients and their whanau, both locally and nationally. My approach translates into strongly evidence-based care, tailored to each individual’s unique background and needs, while directly addressing the urgency of their medical issues. Working locally in the public sector gives me a unique, in-depth understanding of the kidney treatment pathways in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato, as well as strong connections to related specialities like Urology, Cardiology and Endocrinology. As a nephrologist, I recognised that the patient journey is often long and complex, my key focus is to understand where a patient has come from in their health journey, how this affects their current condition, and how best to shape and adapt their treatment pathway. </emp I am an active member of the Data Performance and Quality (DPQ) Working Group within the Renal National Clinical Network. As Chair of the Policy and Advocacy Committee for ANZSN (Australia and New Zealand Society of Nephrology), I have a strong understanding the wider health system and how to maximise the opportunities for my patients and their whanau.  I am actively involved in Clinical Research, a investigator for the IMPEDE trial (Metformin for pateints with Polycystic Kidney Disease). Outside of medicine, I enjoy playing Inline roller hockey for the local Mount Mustangs, mountain biking, sailing and going on tramping trips. Time with family is spent with sports and adventures to Rotorua riding.

Current employment:

I currently serve as a Consultant Nephrologist and General Physician at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, Bay of Plenty, working across Tauranga and Whakatane.

Areas of Expertise:

Together with my General Physician background, I have a strong interest in a wide range of Kidney conditions from all stages of Chronic Kidney Disease through to managing patients on Dialysis or with a Renal Transplant. My areas of interest include 

1. Acute kidney injury (AKI) - acute decline in kidney function typically over a few days to months. 
2. Chronic kidney disease - a sustained decrease in kidney function with is persistent. 
3. Hypertension, especially hypertension in young individuals or those considered to have treatment resistant Hypertension
4. Glomerulonephritis - inflammation of the kidney tissue. 
5. Isolated Urinary abnormalities such as haematuria (blood in urine) or proteinuria (protein in urine) 
6. Renal complications of systemic diseases such as vasculitis or lupus.
7. Recurrent urinary tract stones.
8. Management of patients with kidney transplants, or those being worked up for a Kidney Transplant. 
9. Management of kidney transplant donors.
10. Management of patients on dialysis
11. Electrolyte and acid-base disturbances.
12. Specialist renal physician opinion for immigration medicals or insurance reports.
