About Murray

Professor Murray Barclay is a medical specialist in Gastroenterology and Clinical Pharmacology and has worked at Christchurch Hospital for over 35 years. His extensive expertise mixes a deep concern for patient wellbeing with a breadth of practical and research-based knowledge. A Clinical Professor with the University of Otago, Christchurch, Murray is a research leader in New Zealand and internationally with over 200 research publications across several medical disciplines. Murray is committed to improving Gastroenterology and Pharmacology practice in New Zealand. He has been President of several medical organisations including the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology, NZ section of the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists (ASCEPT) and the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS), which is New Zealand’s senior doctors union. Murray grew up in Balclutha, South Otago and trained in Medicine in Dunedin, Christchurch and Adelaide. He regularly undertakes ongoing professional training.

Research

Professor Barclay is actively involved in a range of research projects in both Gastroenterology & Clinical Pharmacology, with collaborators in New Zealand, Australia, Europe & the United Kingdom. Awards include University of Otago Christchurch Gold Medal for research, Australian Gastroenterology Week Trans-Tasman Lectureship, and the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists Achievement Award.
