Dr Thomas Caspritz FRACP AGAF
Gastroenterologist & Endoscopist
Thomas is an experienced Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist with dual specialist training in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, including experience in Intensive Care, as well as additional training and qualifications in nutritional medicine.
His approach to medicine is centred on personalised care. He aims to understand each patient's individual concerns, investigate symptoms thoroughly and provide clear explanations and evidence-based treatment options. His clinical interests cover a broad range of digestive and liver conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, reflux and upper gastrointestinal disorders, liver disease, small bowel disorders and bowel cancer screening.
Thomas provides high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy, with removal of bowel polyps where appropriate. He also performs specialised investigations including FibroScan/FibroTouch liver elastography for non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis, PillCam Video Capsule Endoscopy for assessment of the small bowel, and hydrogen/methane breath testing.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Thomas studied medicine at the University of Erlangen and Hannover Medical School and completed his specialist training in large academic teaching hospitals in Hannover and Bonn. He has lived and worked in New Zealand since 2012 and combines his work in the public health system with private practice in Christchurch, Timaru and Queenstown.
Thomas is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGAF). He holds New Zealand Conjoint Committee accreditation in gastroscopy and colonoscopy and is an accredited Endoscopist for the National Bowel Screening Programme.
From 2015 to 2023, Thomas served on the Executive Committee of the New Zealand Society of Gastroenterology, contributing to the wider development of gastroenterology services and the specialty in New Zealand.
Away from medicine, Thomas enjoys spending time with his family, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds. His interests include music, skiing, boating and classic cars.
