Dr Kuben Govender

I am a specialist physician in Internal Medicine with a particular focus on Obstetric Medicine. My practice is centred on providing clear diagnoses, practical management plans, and continuity of care for patients with both complex and chronic medical conditions. I completed my undergraduate medical training in South Africa, followed by my early postgraduate years across a range of medical disciplines. I then spent three years in the United Kingdom working at registrar level, gaining broad experience in internal medicine, including geriatric and palliative care. After returning to South Africa, I worked as a general practitioner before completing specialist training in Internal Medicine. I subsequently spent eight years in private practice as a physician before relocating to New Zealand with my family in 2019. We now proudly call the Waikato home. I currently work as a Specialist in Internal Medicine at Waikato Hospital, where I also lead the Obstetric Medicine service. In this role, I support women with pre-existing or newly diagnosed medical conditions during pregnancy and provide preconception counselling to optimise health and plan safe, individualised care. Alongside my clinical work, I am a Prevocational Educational Supervisor with the Medical Council of New Zealand, supporting junior doctors in the early stages of their careers. I have a strong interest in ongoing professional development and have completed postgraduate diplomas in Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Adult Weight Management. I am currently undertaking further training in Geriatric Medicine through the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and I regularly attend international conferences to stay up to date with the latest evidence-based advances in medicine. Outside of medicine, I enjoy travelling with my family and staying active. Since moving to New Zealand, I have developed a passion for trail running and have completed the 50 km Tarawera Ultramarathon. One day, I hope to complete the full 100-mile event.

Areas of Practice

I provide comprehensive care across a wide range of internal medicine conditions, with a focus on both accurate diagnosis and practical, long-term management.

I frequently see patients with complex or unexplained symptoms and work closely with them to reach a clear diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. I also manage common chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, thyroid and other endocrine disorders, as well as cholesterol and weight-related concerns.

A significant part of my practice involves patients with fatigue, low energy, and non-specific symptoms where the cause is not immediately clear. I also assess and manage gastrointestinal concerns, including abnormal liver function tests, and provide a medical perspective on women’s health issues such as perimenopausal symptoms.

I have a particular interest in obstetric medicine, supporting women with pre-existing or newly diagnosed medical conditions during pregnancy. I also offer preconception counselling to help optimise health before pregnancy and develop safe, individualised care plans.
