Constipation

Constipation is a condition where you develop infrequent bowel movements and when you do have a movement it is hard, dry and painful.

What causes Constipation?

Often lifestyle and diet cause constipation.  Diets that are too high in fat, sugar, alcohol or caffeine, or too low in water or high fibre foods (like fruit and vegetables) can lead to constipation.
Some medications can also be the cause.
But there are also some diseases which cause the gut to move too slowly causing a back log in the bowel.  These disorders can include;

If I have Constipation how is treated?

Treatment of constipation would include changes to diet through the introduction of more fibre, supplements and sometimes medication.
If the constipation is caused by an underlying disease then treating that disease is essential.
